Headmaster's News - 17th March 2017

17 March 2017

Dear Parents

5M Assembly

Thank you 5M for your assembly on ‘Fairness’ this morning which is our theme for this term. It was really interesting to hear you talking about what you have been discussing in class and the practical examples were really important for your audience to hear. The story from the Bible of the Prodigal Son and examples of people from history like Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, who stood up for the rights of people who were not treated fairly, really emphasised the theme for this term. Thank you 5M for delivering your message very clearly. You have certainly given us all a great deal to think about. Thank you Miss Macklam for arranging this assembly.

Open Day this Sunday

Our Open Day is on Sunday between 11am and 3pm. Please let anyone know who may be interested in coming. The children are very keen to show their work and are excited about giving guided tours of their school. I look forward to seeing you there.

Cabaret Evening

A big thank you to Mrs Hornby and Mrs Jones who organised a fantastic night on Saturday. We were entertained by Mr Murray’s ‘All Saints’ comprising of 16 singers who performed a range of songs from musicals, films and a number of pop classics. The quality of their performance was incredible especially the group numbers with all 16 performers. My favourite performances were Sam Smith’s ‘The Writing’s on the Wall’ and ‘One Day More’ from Les Misérables. Thank you to all our parents and friends who attended the evening and supported our PTA’s fundraising. This year, PTA funds will be used to upgrade the school’s interactive whiteboards which were originally bought by the PTA over ten years ago.

Out and About in Pre-School

It has been a busy week in Pre-School! They have been making the most of the weather this week with fun and games on the all-weather pitch on Monday and an outside disco on Tuesday with Miss Wyllie leading the dancing. I also watched them walking around the school looking for different shapes inside and outside the classroom. The children were very keen to find rectangles, circles and squares in the different objects around school. It really brought the subject of shapes alive for them and they were all very eager to point out objects and show their knowledge. It is such a rewarding time of the year watching the children’s confidence and understanding develop and also seeing their individual characters really start to shine through. Having watched them around school, I decided to pay Pre-School a visit on Wednesday morning and I was greeted by a hive of activity. Four children were sitting down playing number bingo with Miss Halstead. Each sound was read out and the children studied their card carefully before saying whether they had that sound. I watched Lily sound the letters out before saying, ‘I have that’. Ariana was particularly quick, picking up three sounds for her card. Joshua really listened to the sounds carefully before finding the correct sound on his card. Luke was also sitting quietly, taking great care preparing his Mother’s Day card. Shh! Jessica was on the other side of the room starting an impromptu karaoke session. She was quickly joined by Wei Ann and many other children. They followed the words on the whiteboard, singing out loud with confidence. They continued the whole time I was there, singing song after song and showing a lot of talent for future productions! Tabitha and Leighton were really enjoying playing with the farm animals. They were interacting with each other and letting their imaginations come up with various scenarios. Raees and Alexander were also really enjoying role playing with a variety of vehicles and super heroes. They were so engrossed in their activity that it was difficult to get a clear explanation of the theme but it looked like great fun!  Mrs Harrison was working with a group on their numbers. They were putting double digit numbers in order. I watched Toby pick out a picture of 14 cars and then Freddie with 16 and Safaa with 19 and finally Toby added the last number twenty much to their delight. It was certainly a busy morning in Pre-School! They were full of life, exploring asking questions and it was only 9am! The energy of the staff and children was quite incredible. I can’t wait to pop back in a few days’ time to see what they are all up to and what has caught their imaginations.

Brief Extracts from Year 2’s Blackpool Zoo Accounts

We went to Blackpool Zoo for our school trip. We went on a coach. Evie and I were so excited. First we went to see Kate the enormous elephant eating her breakfast. We then went to say hello to the parrots who squawked loudly. After that we went to the reptile house. In there we saw two crocodiles, a camouflaged frog, a boa, (the world’s largest snake), a cockroach and a beetle. Then we saw the monkeys. I thought they were very cute but suddenly they pounced up at the glass. I shrieked, ‘Ahh!’ Then we saw the sea lion show. While we were waiting, we sat down and ate our lunch. Then we saw the scariest animal ever it was a tiger! But it was in a cage so that was a relief! After the tigers we went to look at the giraffes (Fact: a giraffe’s neck is longer than an elephant’s trunk!). After a busy and very enjoyable day it was time to go home. Shakespeare Comes to Highfield!

The Young Shakespeare Company visited the school on Monday to perform ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. This is always very popular with the children and a great introduction to Shakespeare. The actors’ performance is always incredibly energetic and interactive and the children love joining in as a group and as individuals. The feedback from the children was extremely positive: Isabel said, with a huge smile on her face, that it was amazing; Lilland was so excited that she explained she played a cheeky fairy called Mushy Peas without pausing or taking a breath! Gabrielle said that she played Hermia and found it very funny. Hayyan said that he enjoyed all of it. It was a great success and after 2M’s assembly on Shakespeare, we are now really looking forward to the Years 3 and 5 play ‘The Tempest’ early next term.

Penalty Shoot -Out

Congratulations to the 7 boys who competed in a penalty shoot-out at half-time at PNE on Saturday. They all really enjoyed the experience and their seats in the front row!

North West Ski Federation Competition

Elizabeth and Sophie P from Year 5 took part in the ski competition last weekend and both did very well out of a field of 68 girls.

Rugby

The Under 11s travelled to AKS on Wednesday on a wonderfully bright and warm afternoon. It was a great game with AKS taking the lead in the first half with very direct running. Highfield fought back in the second-half taking the game to the opposition, scoring a number of excellent tries.  AKS managed to score 2 tries in the final quarter to win the game.

Jewellery, Hair Bobbles and Hairbands

Please could I remind parents that children should not be wearing jewellery at school. If you are intending to have your child’s ears pierced, please try to arrange this in one of the longer holidays in the school year. Please could all hair bobbles and clips be a sensible size and in the school colours. Thank you for your support.

Easter is Approaching!

It's that time of year again! It's the Easter Egg Raffle.

If you would like your child to receive an egg, then please purchase raffle tickets which will be on sale soon.  All donations of eggs would be greatly appreciated. Please take them into the school office next week. Thank you very much.

The latest from Highfield Priory

Highfield Priory School added 5 new photos.

Year 4's history topic this term is Prehistoric Britain. They have been looking at what life was like for Palaeolithic people hundreds of thousands of years ago during the Stone Age. One of the clues left over from that time is the paintings found on the walls of caves. Having studied some, 4S decided to create some of their own. Fantastic 4S!
