Aiming High

Our aim is to ensure that each child fulfils his or her potential and takes full advantage of all the opportunities Highfield Priory has to offer. Each pupil is challenged and stretched at every opportunity with the emphasis remaining on literacy, numeracy and scientific investigation. Additionally, we seek to develop children's creative and imaginative aptitudes, whether they are in music, art, sport or the performing arts.

Children are prepared for their first choice of senior school which the majority of our children achieve. Each year a number of children are offered scholarships for academic performance or for their musical or sporting ability.

The National Curriculum sets standards of achievement in each subject for pupils aged 5-14. These were called SATs (Standard Attainment Tests) but have now been renamed NCTs (National Curriculum Tests). Tests are taken when pupils reach the end of each key stage. These tests give an indication of how pupils compare to the national standards.

Prior to 2016, children received a level of attainment from level 2 (the standard expected for a seven year old) through to level 6 (the standard expected for a 14 year old).

Our NCT results place the school in The Sunday Times top 100 prep schools in England, a position we have maintained for many years. At present, we hold the top position in Lancashire.

2016 Changes to the NCT Assessment

In 2016, results were no longer reported as levels. Instead, children are now working towards achieving the 'Expected' standard in English and Maths (based on the criteria provided by the Standards and Testing Agency).

In 2016, the National Average NCT results for Key Stage 2 pupils reaching the new EXPECTED standard was 71% in English and 70% in Maths.

Highfield Priory continues to out-perform the National Average with our NCT results.

As part of Year 5's History Topic, the children have been using a green screen app to stand in front of key Tudor figures and characters to create a postcard image. They have then been eagerly explaining all their favourite parts of the topic on the reverse. Expect to see a Tudor postcard coming your way soon!

We all really enjoyed 6H's Assembly on Friday about being a trustworthy person and trusting others. We particularly enjoyed the way they used the story from the film ‘Finding Nemo’ and the story of Samson (in rhyme) from The Bible to illustrate their important message. Thank you Mrs Haythornthwaite for arranging this thought-provoking assembly and well done, 6H!
