Dear Parents
Year 6 Trip to Leighton Hall
We had a fabulous day learning more about the Victorians at this beautiful house. We were greeted by Mrs Reynolds, whose family own Leighton Hall and still live here, before meeting Pam, our guide for the day! Pam is one of the best guides ever and had the children spellbound as she told them all about the history of Leighton Hall and the families who lived there - before answering their many questions. She showed us the dining room, drawing room, bedroom and music room alongside many Victorian artefacts - while asking the children to guess what they were. We also had a close look at the extendable dining table which had been invented by Richard Gillow - a former owner of the hall. The children listened enraptured to a whole host of information about what Victorian people ate, wore, games the children played and how servants were summoned using a variety of bells. In the music room, three of our pupils entertained us with music played on the Steinway grand piano there. After lunch, our ‘Victorian’ craft activity involved making peg soldiers which the children really enjoyed - especially choosing which colours to dress them in. A visit to the shop, before heading back to Highfield, rounded the day off perfectly! Many thanks to the staff at Leighton Hall for our marvellous day there - and thank you to our Year 6 children for being a pleasure to take out for the day!
Nursery Trip to Martin Mere Nature Reserve
The Nursery children travelled to Martin Mere Wetland Centre last week and enjoyed their time in the fresh air. They thoroughly enjoyed feeding the ducks and even found other species of birds to feed. Watching the otters play was one of the highlights of the day, as they jumped into the water and swam up to the glass to see us. We had a great day!
Year 5 and 6 Audience with Tim Peake
Our Year 5 & 6 children thoroughly enjoyed their trip to An Audience with Tim Peake, hearing all about his inspiration to become an astronaut, how he prepared for the role and the adventures he had in space. Students had a fantastic time exploring space and science as Tim shared his incredible experiences, it really was out of this world!
5M Class Assembly
Thank you to our wonderful Year 5 class, who took us on an exciting journey through some of the most extreme and powerful forces on Earth during their assembly. From fiery volcanoes to shaking earthquakes, they taught us all about the power of planet Earth as well as some interesting facts. Did you know that the hottest temperature ever recorded was in the USA, back in 1913, reaching 56.7 degrees Celsius! Unsurprisingly, the coldest temperature was recorded in Antarctica, reaching -94.7 degrees Celsius. The whole school enjoyed 5M’s passionate rendition of the ‘Water Cycle Song’, although it may be stuck in our heads for a while!
Open Morning
Thank you to our wonderful Year 6 tour guides, who represented our school to the highest standard and did an excellent job of welcoming prospective parents into our school. Our visitors were very impressed with the children, commenting on their confidence and pride in their school. We are extremely proud of everyone in our Highfield community, and we hope to welcome new members after a successful open morning. If you know any friends, family, work colleagues or neighbours who missed our Open Day, please ask them to contact the School Office to arrange a tour.
School Uniform
The children all look very smart this term. With winter approaching, here are a few reminders about our uniform requirements:
Infants and Juniors
- School hats for summer and winter
- School scarf
- School water bottles should be brought to school every day. School water bottles are issued to new starters, in Reception and in Year 3. Any replacements can be purchased from the school office.
- School shoes for all children are to be black. No heels, platforms, trainers or boots.
Bags for Juniors:
- Black, navy, maroon laptop case or smaller size backpack (suitable to fit an A4 folder) with no obvious logos.
School Charity
After the School Charities Assembly last term, where each form was given the chance to talk about the charity they would like the school to support, the School has now voted and the school Charity for this Term is ‘Autism Initiatives.’ I am sure the whole school will now get behind raising funds for this worthwhile cause.
Sports
Cross-Country at Sedbergh Prep
A big well done to the Highfield runners who ran at the Sedbergh Prep invitational cross-country event. They all showed great determination on a very tough, hilly and long course with the sun shining down on them. They also demonstrated great teamwork, cheering each other on throughout the races. A special mention must go to Year 5's Amelie who came 21st out of over 100 runners (including Year 6 girls) - a fantastic achievement! Thank you to the parents who came to support and cheer the team on.
ISA Swimming Gala
Well done to the ISA Swimming Team who represented Highfield at the North ISA Swimming Gala last Thursday in Macclesfield. Highfield came away with some great individual results with Liyaana coming 3rd overall in Backstroke, Lilia 2nd in Butterfly and Shomi coming 1st in Front Crawl and 2nd in Butterfly. Well done to all the swimmers, this gala is a tough event with all races being 50m in length. Congratulations to Shomi who has qualified to swim at the National ISA Swimming Gala in three events. The National Gala will take place in November at the Olympic Pool. Well done!
Football V St Teresa’s
Congratulations to all the boys who played in the Preston Cup match on Tuesday. They demonstrated a lot of composure on the ball, creating space and shooting opportunities. They stayed focused for the whole game and managed to defend the final corner of the match to win 1-0 and progress onto the next round.
