Dear Parents
Y5 and 6 Writing Workshop with Tom Palmer
We were delighted to welcome children's author, Tom Palmer to Highfield this week. Both Year 5 and Year 6 had a writing workshop with Tom where they planned a story based on a real artefact from World War 2. Tom explained about the sort of questions he would ask himself when starting to write a book before working with the children to answer these and build up a story based on that initial artefact. The children had time to ask Tom questions which ranged from: "If you weren't an author, what would you like to do?" to "Where is your favourite holiday destination?" He also showed the children the scrapbooks he had created before starting to write each book and talked about his inspiration for some of them. And finally, many of the children enjoyed choosing one of Tom's books which he signed and chatted to them about. It was a brilliant afternoon and one I'm sure the children will remember for a long time!
6P Class Assembly
Thank you to 6P who taught us all about responsibility this morning in their assembly. As well as explaining the different types of responsibility, and the consequence of not being responsible, they performed ‘Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody’. Despite the fun nature of the story, it did teach us that all of us need to take responsibility for important things instead of waiting for another person to do it. We particularly enjoyed their radiator poem, spoken with such confidence, which we could hear at the back of the hall.
Celebration Assembly
Our children enjoyed celebrating their achievements during their Celebration Assembly. It was wonderful to see how our talented pupils are being recognised for their achievements in such a wide range of activities across the county. Everyone was smiling and excited to share each other’s interests outside school, and stories about their achievements. It was lovely to watch the pride emanating from them, not just for their own achievements, but for their peers’ as well. A big thank you to Mrs Prince for organising this assembly.
PTA Winter Fayre
Thank you to the PTA and all the parents and teachers who worked hard to make sure our Winter Fayre was magical. The children had lots of fun and you could hear the laughter from the car park! Thank you also to all the parents who donated prizes. It was a great start to the weekend.
Year 4 Production
Details for the Year 4 production have been finalised. The performance of ‘Peter Pan’ will take place at Crossgate Church, PR1 5LG on 12th February. This will involve all the Year 4 children and those children who have dance lessons in school. The children are just starting to read through the parts and are very excited about performing to many of you!
PTA Christmas Decorations
A big thank you to the PTA and all the parents who helped spread some Christmas sparkle throughout Highfield today. We are all feeling very festive and the school looks wonderful!
Sports
Netball V SMH
On 20th November, some Highfield girls travelled to SMH for a netball match. With positive attitudes in the freezing cold, the girls delivered an outstanding performance, with a massive 11-4 victory! After the game, we were treated to a lovely, packed lunch from SMH. And remember, in the coldest of moments, a light can shine in you!

Football V SMH and St. Andrews
It has been a busy week of sport. We had two fixtures against St. Andrew’s and St. Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst. All the boys in Year 5 and 6 played against St. Mary’s Hall, and it was great to see them play with such enthusiasm and commitment. They have made significant progress since the start of the term, and it was very rewarding to see their efforts come together in a competitive match. I hope the boys maintain this level of effort as we move into our Rugby season next term.
