Dear Parents
Preschool trip to Spring Farm
On Monday, Preschool visited Spring Farm. The children were very excited about going on the minibus, and when we arrived, Miss Burns had lots of jobs for us to do. First we filled the buckets with food for the sheep, then we made up some bottles for the baby lambs. When feeding the lambs, the children had to hold on very tight to the bottles as they pulled hard when they sucked the milk! We then added fresh hay into the racks as Miss Burns explained why the sheep and lambs have numbers on them. Did you know that the sheep can smell which lambs are their own? Finally, we had a big run on a huge field before sitting down and having a well earned treat. Thank you, Miss Burns, we will be back after the Easter holidays with another group!
Mother’s Day Shop
Thank you to all the parents who helped with the Mothers’ Day shop last week. The children really deliberated over their choices, and I know that all our mums were happy with the decisions that they made. I hope all our mums had a fantastic day and were looked after by their thoughtful children.
Reception Mother’s Day Breakfast
The Reception children enjoyed a croissant and a drink with their mummies and family members as part of their celebration of Mothers’ Day. The children finished the breakfast by surprising everyone with a song, complete with actions, called, 'I love you'. The Dining Room was overflowing with love; well done, Reception!
Victorian Villainy!
On Wednesday evening, our talented Year 5 and Year 3 classes took to the stage for their dramatic performance of ‘Victorian Villainy. Every performer showed incredible confidence, commanding the stage in front of a large audience. All the children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience, working together to create a masterpiece for everyone to enjoy. It will be a memory they will cherish for many years to come. Congratulations to everyone who took part and thank you to: our Directors, Mrs Jones and Miss Macklam; our lighting and cameran technician, Mr Bailey; and all the staff involved. Well done!
Update from Nursery
We have had so much fun in Nursery, enjoying lots of fun activities in the sunshine! We have made potions, and compared objects relating to size, length, weight and capacity. We especially loved painting with bubbles which we did by blowing bubbles fiilled with paint. Blowing bubbles is a great exercise for the mouth as it positions and strengthens the areas of the tongue required to produce sound from the back of the mouth.
Staff News
It was Ms Halstead’s last day at Highfield yesterday after 20 years of outstanding service. She has led the Early Years and Infants departments for the majority of these years and has provided first-class care and education to the children. She has also been DSL for many years (our Designated Safeguarding Lead), supporting the staff and making sure that it is a safe environment for the children. I would like to thank her on behalf of the whole school and wish her the best of luck in her new post with the Civil Service.
Summer Uniform
With the weather improving, please could all children wear Summer Uniform after the Bank Holiday weekend. We still have large numbers of children wearing unnamed uniform in the school. Please make sure all uniform is named so that it can be returned promptly to its owner.
A full uniform list is available on the website. Please could I remind parents of three points on the uniform list:
· No fashion haircuts, hair colours or hair products are allowed in school (including haircuts below a grade three)
· Bags for Juniors – black, navy, maroon laptop case or smaller size back-pack (suitable to fit an A4 folder.) No obvious logos.
· All bobbles/hairbands are to be in school colours only (no glittery ones)
Sports
Y4 Football Tournament
Congratulations to all the boys who represented the school in the Preston Schools Football Tournament at Play Football. The boys did exceptionally well, winning the group stage and the quarter final. In the semifinal they fought back to level the score 2-2, however, in the dying seconds, the opposition went ahead to win the game. The 3rd and 4th place was also a tense affair going to penalties after a very competitive match. The final score was 5-4 to the opposition, with our final penalty rebounding off the post! Football certainly looks in a stong position for the years to come at Highfield.
Mixed Hockey
The children enjoyed a sunny afternoon on the astroturf, putting their practiced hockey skills to the test. With some creative attacking plays and determined defensive performances, both teams work hard to earn their victories in the second half. Well done boys and girls!
X Country
Well done to all the children who represented Highfield at the Preston Schools X Country on Wednesday. They had to run 1 mile on a fast, flat course with the race consisting of over 60 runners.
Chess
Last Sunday, some of our children competed in the Lancashire Junior Championships. The standard of chess was very high, with only the strongest players entering. It was a great performance by Nathan who scored an incredible 4/6 in the championships section. Most of the children in this section were under 18 so this is a terrific result. Billy scored very well in the under 12 section with 3.5/6 and Veda was awarded the highest scoring girl in the under 12 section with 3/6. A great result for each of them, and a proud representation of Highfield, well done!
