About Us

About Us - Text 1

Welcome to Highfield Priory Nursery and Preschool. We welcome children from two to four years of age in our cosy home from home. Our Nursery and Preschool both enjoy our brand new, purpose built 'Barn'. This allows greater coordination and transition through the early years ensuring your child remains settled throughout their time at Highfield Priory. Opening in January 2025, The Barn contains two large playrooms, a messy room as well as a new outdoor area. The Barn also offers an improved sleeping facility and a wet room for the children to use after their muddy forest school sessions. Join us at Highfield Priory School for an exciting chance to explore our brand-new Nursery and Preschool facilities on Friday 31st of January 2025. This event is a great opportunity to meet our staff, learn about our School and Nursery, and see the fantastic environment we offer for young learners. Please register your attendance on the link below.

At Highfield Priory, our children have the freedom to experiment, discover and explore in our large outdoor area and carefully considered indoor learning environments. Who knows what trigger will ignite the spark that leads to the next architect, scientist or explorer? We have a large outdoor area that offers opportunities to be creative, physical and curious, whether this be painting in puddles, climbing on our new outdoor area or using a magnifying glass to carefully look at bugs under logs. Everything is an opportunity to learn!

There are three key areas of learning in Nursery and Preschool: Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. We work with the children as individuals, acknowledging that children progress at different rates as their knowledge, understanding and fine motor skills are developing.

Nursery

In the Nursery there will be a balance of adult led and child initiated activities, some activities may even be led by request of individual children. Under the EYFS guidelines, our nursery children learn through play having first hand experiences with sensory activities. The purpose of this play and active learning is to motivate, stimulate, support and develop skills and concepts, developing language and communication which also develops concentration and positive attitudes both in and outdoors.

Our opening times are Monday-Friday, 8am – 6pm, 51 weeks of the year (closing one week over the Christmas period and bank holidays.) Once the children turn 3, they are able to attend breakfast club which is available Monday – Friday 7.15 – 8am.

Additional Activities

As part of the school community, our Nursery is able to use all of the fabulous onsite facilities, this includes:

  • Dance with Miss Burns and her team from Lancaster Ballet and Theatre school
  • Weekly Library visits
  • Forest School sessions

Preschool

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all our children, using routine times as creatively as possible and taking the opportunity to focus on the individual child. The children have a range of activities in Preschool. These include: role play, sand and water play, the book corner, builder’s workshop, music corner, small world play, painting as well as our large outdoor area. The children will be divided into small groups and one group will go with the teacher to the classroom for name writing and phonics work whilst the other group will enjoy another activity such as painting. These groups will rotate.

Our Preschool is open Monday-Friday, 8am – 3:15pm, during term time. During the holidays, children may be booked into the holiday club. Breakfast club is available from 7:15 – 8am to preschool children.
